Robyn McClendon is a mixed media artist, who’s signature style includes sumi brush painting. Currently, works and lives in the American Southwest.
Intuitive scripting with sumi brush is the heart of my visual language—a deeply personal response to the traditions of Kana script, reimagined through instinct and memory. While rooted in the elegance of sumi brushwork, my process is spontaneous, layered, and calligraphic, evoking the mystery of palimpsests where lost languages echo beneath the surface. Each mark becomes a symbol, a fragment of a myth I’m still remembering—part of what I call ArtaeoMythology, a body of work that speaks in the language of pictograms, gesture, and the forgotten. It is a meditation on ink, intuition, and the enduring human impulse to inscribe meaning onto the page.
